Everything points to the fact that, during these days, the Ministry for the Ecological Transition will present to the European Commission the draft of the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan, a key document that defines the country’s path to achieve European energy and climate goals of 2030.

A path that has to be ambitious, but flexible and realistic, in which gas has much to contribute . And not only because it is a transitional energy, but because it is an accelerator of change, a fuel of and for transformation .
And all this thanks to an infrastructure already created and tested, with a safe, reliable and stable gas sector, as foreseen by both the CNMC and the Ministry, in total financial equilibrium. And it is that the Ministry for the Ecological Transition predicts in its memory of its order proposal a surplus of more than five million euros of the gas system for 2019. And some data, which show the growth of the sector; the number of supply points continues to increase: 340,000 new points (since 2013) and more than 150 new new municipalities connected to the distribution network.
On the other hand, recently the CNMC and the CRE made public a report, according to which they considered economically viable the third gas interconnection between Spain and France.
In its day, the Midcat entered the list of projects of common interest of the European Union considering that Spain is positioned as a gateway for gas to Europe, and that with this infrastructure, Spain could contribute up to 10% of the gas that currently comes from Russia , diversifying origins and providing stability in transit.
The regulators leave the door open for the construction of the Midcat in the future, if the economic and demand situation in both countries offered a clear and positive benefit cost. From the gas sector we position ourselves respecting the measures of the regulators, as we have always done.
The security of gas supply in Spain is very high, given the flexibility that LNG gives us from the 7 regasification plants that we have on our coasts.
And we talked about gas as an accelerator of change because of its intrinsic clean energy factors , because, thanks to gas, we can introduce renewable, quickly and massively, into the electrical system; the substitution of more polluting fuels with gas in thermal applications will reduce emissions; the use of gas in long-distance land and sea transport will reduce transport emissions; air quality will improve with vehicular gas in urban mobility. And finally, the industry will be able to continue working on processes of high energy demand.
The search for consensus to achieve the objectives of neutral carbon is everyone’s task. And natural gas and renewable gas are levers that reinforce and support the achievement of these objectives for the fight against climate change.
